Evidence-Based Strategies for Achieving Rapid and Lasting Language Proficiency - From Natural Acquisition to Technology-Enhanced Learning:A Practical Guide for Learners, Educators, and Course Designers

Stephanie Merkley

Abstract

All language learning follows the same fundamental learning path: differentiating sounds, understanding meaning, and then producing speech. Native speakers develop this path through immersive, playful exposure from infancy, forming strong neural connections effortlessly. Non-native learners benefit from explicit techniques that prioritize the same sequence — sounds, high-frequency vocabulary, contextual practice, and repeated output. This white paper synthesizes insights from language acquisition research, polyglot strategies, and proven platforms. It highlights barriers to learning, the transformative role of technology, and provides an example of how these techniques can be combined. Key recommendation: Combine monolingual immersion, active recall, and consistent output for optimal results.

Keywords: Language learning proficiency, monolingual immersion, active recall, learning techniques, gamification
